Do You Know How Many Dreams You Can Have in One Night
• How many dreams you can have in a single night
There are two different theories that try to answer how many dreams we can have per night, and each one presents a slightly different number. The first theory is that during one night of sleep you will go through a full cycle of sleep stages four times. This means you’ll have four periods of deep REM-sleep when you’re most likely to dream, followed by four periods of light non-REM sleep when dreaming is less common. Therefore, if your total amount of sleep time is seven hours (one-third of a 24-hour period) then you would be able to experience around 4 dreams per night on average. “REM-Sleep is the deepest part of sleep, a kind of sleep that occurs at intervals during the night and is characterized by Rapid Eye Movements, more dreaming and bodily movement, and faster pulse and breathing. All sleep is important, but REM sleep in particular plays an important role in dreaming, memory, emotional processing, and healthy brain development.” The second theory states that there are multiple cycles in one night and therefore more chances for dreams. If you take into account that each cycle lasts 90 minutes, then it makes sense that you could have up to 7 dreams in a single night. If you add up all possible combinations of 90-minute cycles within a 7-hour window (7 x 5 = 35), it seems plausible that some people could have up to 7 dreams in one night. So, what does science say? In actuality, both theories seem to be partially true. Research has shown that people do tend to experience between 3 and 6 dreams per night with an average of 4 or 5 dreams per night. However, these studies were performed over several nights rather than just one so they may not accurately reflect what happens during an individual sleeping session.
• What are common dream themes
While no two people have exactly alike dreams, there are a number of themes that most people share. Some dream theorists say that common themes can be used to understand more about a person's subconscious mind. Common themes include flying, falling, love, being chased or trying to get somewhere.
• Uncommon dream themes
An interesting fact about dreams is that they tend to have specific themes. Here are some examples of uncommon dream themes: wanting to go to sleep, being chased or stalked by a shadowy figure, crying and laughing uncontrollably, flying, trying to break something and seeing it shatter into pieces. Some people report several different dreams within one night while others only remember bits and pieces of any one dream. It all depends on your physical condition (for example, how much sleep you’ve gotten), what’s happening in your life (an upcoming trip or big work presentation) and your state of mind at that moment.
